ITALIAN WINE MERCHANTS
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
With the country's foremost experts on Italian wine, food, and cellar planning, this store—co-owned by super-celebrity chef Mario Batali—presents customers the opportunity to understand the significance that Italian wine plays in European culture. Sales representatives focus on understanding a buyer's likes and dislikes, building a "palette profile," and then keeping a record of every wine purchased. Principal partner Sergio Esposito makes 8-10 trips to Italy every year to ensure that he is getting the best wines from the country's 27,000 producers. The store stocks more than 1,000 wines, ranging from reasonable ($10) to occasion-worthy ($1,000).
