IWM Spotlight Producer: Angelo Gaja

Perhaps the most influential individual in Italian wines over the last 30 years has been Angelo Gaja. In a relentless pursuit to show-off the best of Italy's cellars, Angelo has canvassed the globe. His exhaustive, door-to-door campaign has been a raging success. The world now knows the greatness of Barbaresco and Barolo, especially those bottles with his simple, black-and-white label. The Gaja name emblazoned in bold capital letters across the front embodies world-class quality.

Strikingly profound and fit to live for decades, Gaja's wines display opulence and elegance. When collectors consider Italian wines for their cellar, Gaja is one of the first names they purchase. His wines (along with those of his father and grandfather) have a long-established track record, insuring that the wines will perform well when opened, as well as on the auction block.

Barbaresco is Angelo's masterpiece! With meticulous attention to detail, he brought Barbaresco to fame by reducing crop size, shortening fermentation periods, implementing innovative wine making techniques, aging wines in barrique and even sourcing timber to build his own barrels. His single vineyard Barbarescos - Sori Tilden, Sori San Lorenzo and Costa Russi - are virtually unrivaled in their intensity and have achieved legendary status in the wine world.

Angelo has never been shy about breaking paradigms. He has moved far beyond the noble Nebbiolo, introducing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings to his Piemontese line. In addition, he owns wineries in Tuscany's Brunello and Maremma districts, determined to stay at the forefront of the dynamic Italian wine scene.
