Two You Don't Have, But
Should!
Daniel Thomases' reviews
on wines from the Boot have just been
released through the latest edition of
The Wine Advocate. Many of these highly
rated wines have been staples in the
IWM portfolio for some time now. We agree
with their due praise and are pleased
to present two favorites that received
95 and 97 points respectively!
Back in September, IWM announced
the upcoming arrival of Castello dei Rampolla
and our
early notes indicated this would be another
exceptional release for the centuries-old
Toscana workhorse. Recently, IWMs’ sentiment
has been echoed and there is tremendous buzz
building around this silent producer and
their critically acclaimed Vigna d’Alceo
and Sammarco.
We are pleased to announce that another
installment of this wine has arrived to accompany
a limited allocatioin of Umbria's most accomplished
producer, Arnoldo Caprai, who has received
an astounishing 97 points for the 2000 Sagrantino
Montefalco Riserva 25 Anni!
Please contact Perry

your order or to learn more about the
highly rated wines that appeared in the
press and have always graced our cellar.

Castello
dei Rampolla - The Sleeper
Next
to the legendary "-aia" trifecta
of Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Solaia,
there are the overshadowed wines of Castello
dei
Rampolla. Absent here are the marketing
prowess and glitz, but behold, this is
one the most
highly regarded wines of Toscana and
is the choice of winemakers!
The cellars of the Rampolla winery, near
Panzano in central Tuscany, date back to
the 13th century providing this producer
with more tradition than any Super Tuscan
estate. The di Napoli family combines biodynamic
methods in the vineyards, with modern technology
and the assistance of legendary consultant
oenologist, Giacomo Tachis, to produce world-class
wines. For the collector, the Vigna d'Alceo
is to be recognized.
2001 Vigna d'Alceo $179.00/750ml
(95
Points - Robert Parkers' "The Wine
Advocate")
Saturated
ruby-purple with a tiny clear rim. Graphite,
blackberry,
cassis and mariscino
cherries on the deep, potent nose. Black
fruits, plum preserves, sweet oak and
licorice permeate the palate. Succulent and
juicy
with abundant glycerin, round tannin,
sufficient supporting acidity and a lengthy
finish.
Parker has labeled this wine, “The
Sammarco on steroids” and the wine
is consistently and unanimously awarded
95 - 99 points by the critics, which
IWM stands
by.
2000 Sammarco $82.00/750ml
2000 Sammarco $164.00/1.5L
Saturated ruby streaked with dark purple.
Taut and closed in youthful concentration.
A stimulating bouquet of red plum, black
currant, cigar and lead pencil. The rich
flavors lurking in the full-bodied palate
precisely reflect the nose and finish long
with ripe, yet tongue-clenching tannins.
2001
Chianti Classico $22.50/750ml
Deep ruby red. Zesty currant, tangy raspberry,
old leather and fragrant spice aromas. The
palate is soaked with sweet, marinated cherries
and smoked meat. Rustic in its muscular,
fruity concentration.

High
Praise for Arnaldo Caprai
In the late Eighties, a young Marco Caprai turned
a family hobby into a radical movement and produced
legendary wines securing Umbria's place in the
world of wine.
Before Marco's efforts, the Sagrantino grape
was relatively unknown, as was the small hillside
town of Montefalco. Nothing would indicate the
tremendous turnaround this once dormant zone
would incur. Marco took the lead and invested
in the land applying the results of painstaking
research (with assistance from the University
of Milan) on the indigenous varietal. The result
has brought international attention to the high-tech
Montefalco estate and its slick, big red wines.
2000 Sagrantino di
M. 25 Anni $99.00/750 ml
2000 Sagrantino di
M. 25 Anni $210.00/1.5L
2000 Sagrantino di
M.o 25 Anni $420.00/3.0L
(97 Points
- Robert Parkers' "The Wine Advocate")
The
Sagrantino di Montefalco Riserva 25 Anni
is the result of Marco Caprai’s passionate
research and careful clonal selection of
the best
grapes of Sagrantino.
It is a jubilee wine produced for the first
time in 1996 to celebrate the 25th anniversary
of
the winery. Since then it has kept this
name together with its unique character,
power
and elegance.
Deep, dark purple-blackness fills the glass.
Wild cherry and leather dominate the nose, accompanied
by a hint black pepper and tobacco. Still young
on the palate, its elegance is highlighted by
a soft and velvety body. Use of new barrels is
evident by the spice and vanilla flavors. Very
complex and long on the finish, with polished
and sustaining tannins.
2000 Sagrantino di
M. Collepiano $49.00/750ml
2000 Sagrantino di M. Collepiano $115.00/1.5L
2000 Sagrantino di M. Collepiano $245.00/3.0L
Collepiano is Sagrantino’s area of production,
and refers to the gentle slopes that characterize
the hills of the area. The wine symbolizes the “Renaissance” of
Montefalco as a wine region and is produced
with only the Sagrantino grape, the unique
variety
grown only in Montefalco.
Suave and sophisticated. A compelling nose of
fresh evergreen and frutti di bosco. Rich berry
fruit is accented by peppery spice on the palate.
Dense extract and substantial tannin and alcohol
strike the right balance.
