A
Faster Maturing Gaja....
A little more approachable
and fit, Italy’s most influential
and outspoken winemaker is back at IWM
with a new look.
Here is an opportunity to
understand the greatness of Gaja through
half bottles – ideal
for sampling cellar candidates or tasting
one of Italy’s most collected wines.
The half-bottle format causes the wines to
mature faster, allowing you to now experience
wines like the opulent and elegant 1997 Sperss
(which received a 99-Point tattoo from Parker)
or Gaja's signature masterpiece, Barbaresco!
Read on below to learn about these wines.
Should you have additional questions regarding
Gaja, Barolo, Barbaresco and larger bottle
formats, please contact our Senior Portfolio
Manager, Perry
Porricelli, at 212.473.2323.

Barbaresco
- His Signature!
Barbaresco is Angelo's masterpiece! His
single vineyard selections - Sori Tilden,
Sori San Lorenzo and Costa Russi - are unrivaled
(with perhaps the exception of Bruno Giacosa)
in their intensity and have achieved legendary
status in the wine world.
In this extraordinary example, Angelo goes
back to his roots, making a traditional style,
blended Barbaresco, the way his father and
grandfather had done. The grapes come from
various vineyards in the Langhe zone, making
it more complex and more complete. He now
reinforces this by only making one Barbaresco,
100% Nebbiolo. In contrast, the great single
vineyard wines of Sori Tilden, Sori San Lorenzo
and Costa Russi each contain a touch of Barbera.
1998 Barbaresco $115.37 (375ml)
2000 Barbaresco $ 77.66 (375ml)

Sperss – Barolo
Nostalgia
The name means “nostalgia” in
Italian and refers to a particular vineyard
site where
the Gaja family had purchased grapes until 1961.
It was at this point the family began producing
wines exclusively from their own vineyards and
a series of changes began to unfold that would
have a profound impact on Piemonte wines.
Year-in and year-out, the Sperss exhibits huge,
classic Barolo characteristics: ripe, expansive
black cherry and strawberry fruit, truffles,
earth and streaks of tar. Each vintage displays
uncommon complexity and stature in these full-bodied,
chewy, tannic bottlings.
1994 Barolo Sperss $ 72.30 (375ml)
*1997 Langhe Sperss $141.62 (375ml)
1998 Langhe Sperss $116.34 (375ml)
1999 Langhe Sperss $118.35 (375ml)

Wine Advocate”)

Darmagi
- Cabernet, Piemonte Style
Meaning “what a pity” in the
Piemontese dialect, “Darmagi” is
what Angelo’s grandfather sighed every
time he passed the hillside vineyard where
Angelo ripped out old Nebbiolo vines and
replaced them with the internationally acclaimed
Cabernet Sauvignon. But, Angelo’s gamble
worked…again!
A Cabernet Sauvignon (95%), Merlot (3%),
and Cabernet Franc (2%) blend where smoky
black fruits join minerals, dried violets
and anise to create a striking nose and palate.
Polished tannins, solid acidity and mouth-coating
glycerin build into a layered, full-bodied
profile. This bottling will typically develop
nicely for several decades, so our older
ones are really starting to drink beautifully
now. A work of art!
1997 Darmagi $108.24 (375ml)
1998 Darmagi $120.38 (375ml)
1999 Darmagi $120.38 (375ml)

Sito
Moresco & Rossj Bass
Sito Moresco
Nebbiolo (35%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Sauvignon
(30%). The Sito Moresco combines complexity
and mid-term longevity with refinement and
accessibility. The fresh fruit aromas of blackberry
and black currant are complimented by intriguing
notes of violet and mint. Intensely flavored,
silky and delineated. The dark berry fruit
from the Cabernet and Merlot follows onto the
palate where the Nebbiolo contributes strokes
of leather and tobacco smoke. A suave wine,
with harmonious acidity, silky tannin and a
delightfully long finish.
2000 Sito Moresco $28.27 (375ml)
Rossj Bass
The grapes for Rossj Bass are sourced from a
vineyard named for Angelo’s youngest
daughter, Rossana – Rossj, for short.
This white is a clearly defined, more graceful
Chardonnay (with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc)
that spends less time in barrique than the
Gaia & Rey. The delicate perfume of citrus
fruits and honeysuckle is followed by a richly
fruited, medium-bodied palate showing a very
subtle touch of spicy new oak. Older versions
exhibit nuts and honey – signs of development.
Though more lithe than the other Piemonte Chardonnay,
this is nonetheless a wine with admirable depth,
adequate acidity and fine persistence.
2003 Rossj Bass $28.27 (375ml)

A Wine
Club For The Collector!
We can proudly say, there is no other. Through
IWMs' Patron Wine Club, we open our cellar
doors and include members in something rare
and unique. Selections are not based on inventory,
but rather driven by the desire to enlighten
collectors and enthusiasts to the world of
high quality Italian wine. Open up your palate
and learn what makes these wines great.
There is no other merchant
that would include the limited-production
cult favorite of the
South - Montevetrano; or the most collectible
Barbaresco in the world - Giacosa Santo Stefano;
or perhaps the great example of modern-style
Barolo from the 1997 vintage - Scavino Bric
del Fiasc. All have received the IWM Stamp
of Excellence and are Tre Bicchieri winners
and/or have received 95+ ratings from Parker.
In addition to receiving these wines well
below market value, members have other benefits.
