Famiglia
Anselma: Barolo's Boy Wonder
A
long time favorite of IWM, this innovative
but traditional Barolo house represents
the future of Barolo under the guidance
of the young Maurizio Anselma and his
parents Renato and Giovanna. They have
invested
in the land and built up a massive new
estate that will serve as one of the largest
wine cellars in all Barolo and an educational
center for wine enthusiasts seeking more.
Be sure to visit this new estate on your
next trip to Piemonte.
“Barolo e nient’altro,” proclaims
the Famiglia
Anselma. Barolo and nothing
else, their motto and their passion. Renato
and Giovanna Anselma began buying vineyards
in the 70’s and continued for two decades,
amassing land in the prized Barolo, Monforte
d'Alba, and Serralunga zones of Barolo. The
founders’ son Maurizio is now at the
head of the winery, leading the estate to
ever greater quality. He believes firmly
in the influence of the terroir in shaping
the estate’s wines and imparting to
them unique characteristsics. Renato and
Giovanna are still in the heart of the action
too, running the cellar and the vineyards,
respectively, all hands-on.
Anselma’s high standards are apparent
from the two wines they create. The first
is their basic Barolo, produced in every
vintage; they see this as a simple drink
meant to be enjoyed “without much
complication or fuss.” Barolo Adasi
is their reserve wine, and Maurizio sees
it as fit “evolve and become better
with time.” At this time the 2000
Adasi is still in barrel, but we are featuring
the latest Barolo release, as well as wine
from 1998 vintage. In addition, be sure
to sample a Barolo with age that's ready
to drink with the 1993 - a rare treat!
Famiglia Anselma
2000 Barolo $ 28.95 (375ml)
Famiglia Anselma 2000 Barolo $ 44.95 (750ml)
Famiglia Anselma 2000 Barolo $109.00 (1.5L)
Bright red fruit on the nose with hints of
spice and minerals. More berries and some
wood on the palate, supported by bright tannins.
Full body and a long finish.
Anselma's Other Barolos:
Famiglia Anselma 1998 Barolo $56.00 (750ml)
Famiglia Anselma 1993 Barolo $47.00 (750ml)

Collio's Cool
Damijan
Damijan Podversic started out in the family
business as a negociant. But when he found
a small abandoned plot in the Collio Goriziano,
he ignored the common attitude that it was
too difficult to work and eagerly bought
it. He cleared the land, rebuilt terraces,
and set to replanting it: not only does he
now cultivate top-quality grapes, but his
once skeptical neighbors eye his steep mountaintop
vineyard with great envy.
Podversic’s work in the cellar is no
less daring and no less successful. Breaking
the confines of tradition and shunning modern
practices like the use of stainless steel,
Damijan pursues natural winemaking, which
he learned from the great Friulian producer
Josko Gravner. His Collio Biancos are both
fermented on the skins with natural yeasts;
he never bottles or releases a wine unless
it has had ample time to develop; he even
insists on bottling the Kaplja in December
while the moon is waning. Though already
producing excellent wines, this young man
holds great promise for the future.
2001 Kaplja Collio Bianco $38.50 (750ml)
A powerful belend of Chardonnay, Tocai Friulano,
Malvasia Istriana. Golden yellow bleeding
into an orange core. Honeysuckle and fruit
on a spicy nose. Similar palate with well-integrated
minerals, yeast, and wood accent the fruit
nicely.
2001 Ribolla Gialla Collio Bianco $38.50
(750ml)
Ribolla Gialla. Deep gold. A bouquet of honey,
nuts, and sweet spices with bitter undertones.
The same flavors continue on the palate joined
by apples and cantaloupes. Large, powerful,
elegant.
2001 Prelit Collio Rosso $38.50 (750ml)
A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Dark forest fruit, fresh herbs, and anise
on the nose. This big, plush wine has bright
young tannins and will live a long life in
the cellar.
