Montalcino's Super Tuscans
To a degree unlike almost any other wine district in Italy, Montalcino embodies quality. Brunello, one of Italy's most prestigious and longest-living wines, has long set the standard for high quality in this pocket of south-central Tuscany.

Starting in the late 1970s, many Tuscan estates began to create styles outside the traditional wine classifications. In Montalcino, winemakers were looking to stretch their creativity by producing something different. These Super Tuscans emerged from a legacy of excellence in winemaking, and their superior quality continues to shine through today. Sample the selections below to discover why they are standouts!

Dark ruby. Layered, concentrated aromas. Dark berries and tar with notes of creamy, voluptuous oak. Boisterous tannins.

Cerbaiona - Cerbaiona Rosso 1999 $51.00

Profound ruby streaked with black. A wine with a sense of its soil. Black currants, minerals and violets on the nose flow into crushed black cherries and licorice on the palate. Full-bodied and racy.

Brunello and Other Wines of Montalcino
Emanuele Pellucci wrote the first book on Brunello di Montalcino way back in 1979. His work is truly fundamental for anyone interested in the wines of Montalcino.

This work provides extensive information on these wines, their area of production and the principal producers, covering everything from the history of Montalcino to the characteristics of the wines themselves. A geological map and tables on production and vintages from 1945 onwards are included.

Supplementary chapters address the other important wines of the area, such as Rosso di Montalcino and Super Tuscans. There is also a section dedicated to the local cuisine.
