Arnaldo Caprai
1999 Montefalco Rosso Riserva
- $55.25
Dark ruby-garnet. Damson
and wild cherry dominate the nose, accompanied
by a hint violets. Use of new barrels is
evident by the spice and vanilla flavors.
The long finish shows-off polished and sustaining
tannins.
1999 Sagrantino di Montefalco
“Collepiano” - $43.11
Suave and sophisticated.
A compelling nose of fresh evergreen and
frutti di bosco. Rich berry fruit is accented
by peppery spice on the palate. Dense extract
and substantial tannin and alcohol strike
the right balance.
Braida
1999 Bricco Uccellone -
$69.00
Striking opaque purple in the glass. Loads
of espresso, rich chocolate, black cherries
and raspberries. Compact and full-bodied,
with layers of texture. “International”
style Barbera at its most intense!
2000 Il Baciale - $19.00
This blend of Barbera and
Pinot Nero results in a nose of raw redcurrant
and tobacco leaves. Juicy on the palate,
with spicy oak and herbs accenting the red
and black fruits. Remarkable roundness and
great length.
La Spinetta
2000 Pin - $39.95
Over-the-top. Monolithic,
exotic, intense. Luxuriously textured with
intense black plum, black currant and black
cherry. Smoke and spice reveal the influence
of new barrique. Bold, rich tannins on the
palate with a healthy swathing of alcohol.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo.
2001 Barbera d’Asti
Ca’di Pian - $21.00
Aromas of espresso, roasted
hazelnut and ripe plum are followed by intense
flavors of red plum, tobacco and lead on
the palate. Almost heady acidity is balanced
by generous alcohol and mild tannins. Slightly
rustic, but the long finish shows this wine
has a fine pedigree.
Moccagatta
1998 Barbaresco Basarin
- $54.00
Soft hints of old leather
and rose on the nose lead into flavors of
lush, ripe strawberries and dried herbs
on the palate. Soft tannin and crisp acidity
make this a tremendous wine for hearty winter
dishes.
1998 Barbaresco Bric Balin
- $54.00
Great aromatics of new
saddle leather, cedar and black cherry.
A typical rim of Nebbiolo amber surrounds
the dark ruby core. Medium-bodied and well-balanced.
A wine for tonight or 5-6 years down the
road.
Pira
1998 Barolo Margheria -
$65.00
Knock-out Barolo! Exhibiting
significant structure thanks to the vintage,
giving the wine an almost backward character.
Roasted plum, black cherry liqueur and underbrush
make for a fascinating flavor profile. Richly
colored, full of glycerin and moderately
tannic, this is a truly complete wine.
2001 Dolcetto - $16.00
Super-ripe aromas of black
plums, licorice and dark chocolate. Fleshy,
voluptuous and multi-layered. Intense chocolate-covered
berry fruit as well as an interesting touch
of eucalyptus. A superb value.
Scavino
1999 Barbera - $32.00
Swathes of raspberry, sour
cherry and charred oak. Unctuous, yet firmly
structured. Firm acids give the bottling
a welcome tang. The finish is full of character
with just a touch of dusty tannins.
2001 Dolcetto - $17.00
An unusual Dolcetto. Boastful
aromas of dried rose, cherry, tart strawberry
and roasted meat. Voluminous, with a profusion
of blackberry and raspberry on the palate.
A moderate finish with nuances of spice
and herb.
