Bruno Giacosa - The Embodiment
of Tradition
With more than a half-century of experience
in crafting wines from the Nebbiolo grape, Bruno Giacosa continues
to write history with his Barolo and Barbaresco
wines. He is Piedmont's most enduring "traditional" winemaker.
The secrets of the land and how to deal with the looming variables
that pose
threats to the Lange Hills are inscribed in his hands of labor. This
is knowledge that is not replaced with
technology,
and
his
wines,
even
in an off-vintage, represent the best Italy has to offer.
It is Giacosa's traditional approach that unanimously wins
him praise among all critics and wine enthusiasts around the
world. In the words of Gambero
Rosso
2003, "Bruno Giacosa is one of the last surviving wise old men of
the Langhe, a sage who knows the territory and its secrets like the back
of his
hand and whose more than 50 years of experience have given him an ability
to vinify Nebbiolo as few others can." This
opinion is further echoed by Robert M. Parker, Jr., "Bruno Giacosa...
is a quiet and dignified winemaking genius in Neive ... the least promotion-conscious
winemaker in Italy who prefers to let his wines do the talking for him."
1999 Barbaresco Santo Stefano, $116.48
The deep saturated red color is brillantly perfumed with a nose of cherry
and redcurrant, complicated by notes of tobacco, and smoke camphor. Full-bodied,
with a velvety
texture, magnificant concentration, and an exquisite finish. This one
requires a comfortable place in the cellar.

Scavino - The Barolo Aficiando's
Barolo!
Enrico Scavino's majestic reputatuion is earned from
a vinification method that respects both the hand of the winemaker
and the fruit of the land. He is among the first in the
Langhe to build a new
winery with modern, temperature-controlled storage and winemaking facilities.
To compliment the technology, he has adopted the practice of drastic
selection in the vineyards which produce such low yields
that even the difficulties
of an off-vintage could be overcome. A similar approach that is implemented
by the more traditional stylist, Bruno Giacosa.
The father-and-daughter team of Enrico and Enrica embody the best
of Nebbiolo winemaking today and this is most evident in the recent
Rocche dell'Annuziata
releases. The enchanting 1996 Rocche
dell'Annuziata was perhaps their best ever, returning
the Three Glass (Gambero Rosso) form
to this highly-sought Barolo. The vintage of 1999 promises to
be a wine with incredible reserve and class as well.
1999 Rocche dell'Annuziata, $139.90
The rich red-ruby color compliments the attractive aromas of crushed berries,
licorice and camphor. Extremely concentrated and dense; sweetness
is balanced
with sound acids to give the fruit alluring clarity. The
tannins are faultlessly distributed, allowing the wine fruit to explode
for a long and caressing finish.
Santa Restituta (Angelo Gaja) -
A Piedmont Legend in the Toscana Hills!
Angelo Gaja is perhaps the most influential individual in Italian wines over
the last 30 years. In a relentless pursuit to show-off the best of Italy's
cellars, Angelo has canvassed the globe tauting the greatness of Barbaresco
and Barolo. His exhaustive, door-to-door campaign has been a raging success.
The Gaja name emblazoned in bold capital letters across the front embodies
the very essence of world-class quality. Gaja's quest to put Piedmont on
the same page as the Grand Crus of Bordeaux does not end at the Langhe Hills.
His experience with Nebbiolo has expanded, leading to
the development
of great
wines from Sangiovese.
In 1994 Gaja acquired
its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in
Montalcino. The property's forty acres of vineyards produce two
Brunello
di Montalcino wines called Sugarille and Rennina. The parish
church, or “pieve,” of Santa Restituta stands
on the winery property and gives it its name. The Sugarille
vineyard
was first recorded in the inventory of the Pieve complied
in 1547. It has remained the name of the vineyard for more
than
four centuries and is now also the name of the wine from
this vineyard.
1999 Sugarille $125.00
Deep ruby. A rich, complex nose consisting of
ripe fruit (plums, wild cherries), violets and
a slight
hint
of cloves
and tobacco. Elegant structure and ripe, well-integrated
tannins.

Tenuta
San Guido - The One That Started It All...
You’ve heard it before, Sassicaia is
the most collectible Italian wine to come out of the Boot. This now historic
wine is single-handedly responsible for launching the Super Tuscan movement
and remains one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Marchese Nicolò
Incisa della Rocchetta continues the 36 year old tradition at the Tenuta
San Guido estate, which is considered by many to be the
birthplace of Tuscan Cabernet. He is NOT influenced by the international
demand to create a super-extracted, monster red wine; instead, he continues
to produce the most elegant Super Tuscan there is!
2001 Sassicaia,
$147.00
Perhaps
the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend ever
produced. Sassicaia is a masterful cuvee of the best grapes from the
vineyards of Tenuta San Guido, situated on the hilly slopes in a subzone
of Bolgheri.
In 1994 this magical spot was crowned with its own DOC status, the first
time an Italian wine was granted this honor!

TWO FROM VENETO
Guiseppe Quintarelli - The Great One!
Giuseppe Quintarelli’s Amarone, Recioto and Alzero
wines defy description. They are life changing - wines to
enjoy
with your most discriminating friends
that understand wine. Wines of this caliber simply
speak for themselves.
The Master from the Veneto makes some of the world’s
most sought-after wines; legendary for their complexity, longevity
and
sheer power. Produced
in very limited quantities according to artisanal methods, these
are not “high-tech” wines. Their greatness stems
from the inherent quality of the vineyards, terroir and the
natural
talent
of this master.
1995 Amarone, $265.00
Perhaps the greatest Amarone
Quintarelli has ever made…that means one of the best
Amarone EVER. Incredible complexity and power, with tons
of regional character.
A truly stunning
wine with great potential for long-term ageing.

Romano Dal Forno - The Next Great One!
" Romano Dal Forno is a local legend. 'The rest of us take vacations,
occasionally play a round of golf in the afternoons,' said
a major Veneto-
wine producer, 'But not Dal Forno. He works every day. He not only knows
every bunch
in his
vineyards - he knows every grape!"
All of the Dal Forno wines are "experience" wines,
transporting you to a new level of wine appreciation. Nonetheless,
in the opinion of IWM,
Romano reaches his pinnacle in his expressions of Valpolicella.
Without doubt, his dense, creamy Valpolicella wines are the
best of the Veneto
- trumping even those of the great Giuseppe Quintarelli.
2000 Valpolicella $97.50
Beautifully
saturated. The dense ruby/purple color leads into aromas of wild
raspberry, prune, licorice, tar and mint. The immense body, fine
balance
and crystalline purity astonish as the brilliant flavors rest persistently
on the palate.
