An Epicurean Legend Passes
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing
of Luigi Veronelli. He passed away on November 29th at the age of
78. Gino, as he was called, was not merely one of Italy’s most
respected wine and food critics; he was loved by all for his warmth
and his joie de vivre. As a young man he pursued Classical Studies
and Philosophy, and his intellectual vigor remained with him throughout
his life, infusing his writing with poignant descriptions that captured
food and wine as no one else could.
Veronelli began as editor of several magazines, including “Il
Gastronomo,” a philosophical-gastronomical publication that
enjoyed great popularity. He continued to write and also collaborated
on television shows, always extolling the virtues of Italy and its
cuisine. He played an important role in establishing the value of
the land as the essence of wine in an era when the ground was widely
considered a mere tool in winemaking and is remembered as one of
the first to encourage winemakers to “get their hands dirty.” Veronelli
left the world with innumerable friends and admirers, who are now
joined by epicureans around the world in mourning his death.
