WINE NEWS/ In The US Italian
Wine Imported More Than French
Last year Italy defeated France not only in matters of exported
quantity but also in matters of value (822 million dollars) with
32% of the US market vs. 28% reached by France. Although the
skeptics see it as a consequence to the boycotting of French
products, the
growth is a postivie sign for Italian winemakers. It has also
been observed that American consumers and food managers spend
one third
of their budget designed for imported products on Italian Wine
and only one fifth for French.
During the first trimester of 2004 the export to the US has increased
by 10.2% overcoming France (-23.1%) and emerging countries such
as Australia and Chile. The export could duplicate and reach the
value of over one billion euros in one year if the agreements on
international trade by WTO would give a clear stop sign to growing
phenomena such as wine piracy and false made in Italy. This should
soon change thanks to an agreement between the Coldiretti president
Paolo Bedoni and the president of the National Farmers Union (NFU)
Dave Frederick which aims to reinforce clarity on the origin of
products and ingredients on all labels.
