Italian Women Taking Charge of the Wine Menu!
A recent study by IdeEuropee on Italian women
who are seriously interested in wine, based on those who frequent
wine shops, has shown that women’s presence is predominant
and has been steadily increasing for five years now. Most striking
is their increased expertise, which now almost matches that of their
male counterparts. They distinguish themselves most clearly from
men by their educated consumption and by their concern for quality
rather than for price.
Sommeliers have also found that when they don’t know which
wine to choose, women will not hesitate to ask for advice. In these
cases, they are generally interested in what will go best with certain
foods, while origin, price, and alcoholic content to be secondary
considerations. For the most part, however, they were sure of themselves
and had no trouble navigating among the numerous choices.
