WINE NEWS /
With the 2004 Harvest, Roero Becomes DOCG
A national committee has approved DOCG recognition
for Roero, almost covering the range of Nebbiolo-based DOCG wines
(with an allowance for up to 5% Arneis) from Albese in Piemonte.
The production zone of Roero wine is located within the province
of Cuneo. According to the State Undersecretary for Agricultural
and Forestry Policies, the Roero DOCG designation is an important
step that reflects the tenacity of a territory and its wine growers,
and it helps create an image of Italian vitiviniculture that is increasingly
focused on quality.
The President of the Enoteca del Piemonte explained that above all
else, the passage from DOC to DOCG status rewards Nebbiolo, one of
the native varietals that is most representative of Piemonte and
which is now the base of five of the region’s eight DOCG wines.
He pointed out that this demonstrates the flexibility of the region
in its ability to create wines with such distinct personalities derived
from the same grape.
Although the winemakers of Roero have long been awaiting this new
designation, the President of the Enoteca Regionale del Roero considers
it a starting point rather than a finish line, an extra inspiration
to continue to promote and gain recognition for the wine of Piemonte.
