WINE NEWS / EU Project Uses Nanoelectronics in Viticulture

The University of Florence is participating in a European project that aims to study and ultimately to guarantee the quality and safety of comestibles like wine, fruit, and grains through micro-nanoelectronics. This venture, the joint work of many important European industries along with the foremost micro-nano-system research centers, will last 42 months. Experiments have already begun in Florence, where researchers plan to monitor every step of wine production with microchips and computer stations, from environmental conditions like humidity, light, and temperature to chemical analysis and pathogenic agents. The technology will also permit optimization of grape-picking and a more efficient use of fertilizers and pesticides.
