WINE NEWS / Robert Parker Receives Italy's Highest Honor

Renowned wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr., has been made a Commendatore or Commander in Italy’s National Order of Merit. This bestowed honor is the country’s highest and was conferred upon Mr. Parker for his contributions in recognizing the quality of Italian wine, in addition to his educational efforts concerning Italian wine in The Wine Advocate, which he writes and publishes.

This is not the first time a country has recognized the significance of Robert Parker’s efforts in the wine industry. Mr. Parker was awarded Knighthood in France’s National Order of Merit in 1993 and then Knighthood in the Legion of Honor, France’s highest honor, in 1999. He was decorated directly by President Jacques Chirac at a ceremony at the Elysee Palace on June 22, 1999. President Chirac, in bestowing France's highest honor, stated that "Robert Parker is the most followed and influential critic of French wines in the world, something I (President Chirac) witnessed recently when choosing wine for President Clinton, who automatically referred to Robert Parker as his reference for making a proper wine buying decision."

In addition to his work with The Wine Advocate, Mr. Parker is known for his fourteen books, which have been translated into numerous foreign languages for an extensive international audience.
