Caprai Tops Ratings of Most Respected
Reviews
A recent classification of Italy’s top wines
performed by investment journal Milano Finanza was determined by
combining the
scores given by the Boot’s most highly regarded wine publications,
including the Gambero Rosso, l’Espresso, Ais, Veronelli, and
Maroni. Arnaldo
Caprai, the estate primarily responsible for the
revival
of Umbria’s
native Sagrantino
di Montefalco, claimed first place with its Sagrantino “25
anni,” a high-end wine created to celebrate the 25th anniversary
of the winery in 1993. Marco Caprai, who currently runs the family
business, believes that this honor attests to the importance of indigenous
varietals and their inextricable link to Italy’s individual
wine zones.
The classification as a whole evidences an impressive presence of
developing wine regions, though classic areas like Toscana and Piemonte are still dominant. Following Caprai’s ’25 anni’ in
the top ten were: Tenuta
dell’Ornellaia 2001 Masseto and 2001
Ornellaia, Gaja 2001 Barbaresco, Basilisco 2001 Aglianico del Vulture ‘Basilisco,’ Poliziano
2001 Nobile di Montepulciano ‘Vigna Asinone,’ Fattoria
del Cerro 2001 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ‘Vigneto Antica
Chiusina,’ Bruno Rocca 2001 Barbaresco ‘Rabajà,’ Tenuta
San Guido 2001 Sassicaia, and La
Spinetta 2000 Barolo ‘Vursu
Vigneto Campè.’
