In Toscana, Maremma DOC is Proposed
A recent hearing on the proposed “Maremma
Toscana” DOC witnessed a heated exchange of ideas as producers
and experts argued their cases. Various arguments highlighted the
benefits of such an “umbrella” denomination that would
represent the principal varieties grown in the province of Grosseto
(without abolishing such smaller classifications as Bolgheri). Many
producers believe that this would provide a more bold market presence,
making
their
promotional
efforts
more
effective
in countries
where consumers are as yet unfamiliar with wines like Morellino di
Scansano and Bolgheri. Included in this classification would be such
winemakers as Le
Macchiole, Tenuta
dell’Ornellaia, Tua
Rita,
and Gaja’s Ca’ Marcanda, many of whose wines are currently
restricted to IGT status despite offering top quality.
