DOC Day Celebrates the Enogastronomy
of le Marche
The middle Italian region of le
Marche celebrated
its enogastronomic accomplishments recently with a two-day “DOC
Day” organized by Giulio Silenzi, Agricultural Counselor of
the Region. This event was part of a larger effort called I vini
delle Marche. Le migliori marche di vini. – ‘The Wines
of le Marche. The Best Wine Estates,’ and in attendance were
the region’s respected experts on food and wine, among them
enologist Alberto Mazzoni (of such estates as Azienda Agricola Sartarelli
and Mario Lucchetti), as well as numerous specialized journalists.
Winemakers and gastronomes from the four provinces of le Marche flaunted
the best manifestations of their epicurean traditions, which range
from the eminent Verdicchio and Rosso
Cònero to the unsung
Vernaccia de Serrapetrona, a sparkling red wine that is just now
making its name heard in wine circles around the world. Guests further
enjoyed the cultural riches of the region on excursions to art exhibitions
and opera productions, and the grand finale of the celebration was
a trip to the Center for Sensory Analysis in Matelica. Silenzi proudly
concluded that his campaign to herald the products of le Marche around
the world all comes down to the land: the wine and food we enjoy
today are expressions, he believes, of a collective understanding
and artistic virtuosity that have been developing for centuries in
harmony with the unique terroir of the region.
