A Celebration of Trentino’s Sparklers
To celebrate their acquisition of the sixteenth-century
Roccabruna Palace, the agency responsible for the promotion of the
products
of Trentino hosted an exposition of the region’s sparkling
wines. A tasting of numerous Trento Classico DOC bottlings accompanied
the artwork dedicated to these wines that was displayed throughout
the palace. Of particular interest was the panel discussion on the
lands best suited to production of sparkling wine: Trentino (often
grouped with the neighboring Alto
Adige, where superlative wines are made from Pinot
Noir and the indigenous Lagrein),
Champagne, and Penedés. Led by Daniele Cernilli of the highly
regarded Gambero Rosso and with participants from all three of the
featured
regions, the panel reviewed the qualities necessary for the creation
of high quality sparklers and then proceeded with an examination
of the past, future, and current market presence of various sparkling
wines. Speaker Carlos Delgado, writer for the publication “El
País,” explained the unique position of Cava as independent
from any classification system or geographical restraints; journalist
and Professor Raoul Salama analyzed the historical developments that
have forged the distinct image of Champagne; and President Mauro
Lunelli of the Institute for the Trento Classico DOC expounded the
importance of Trentino on Italy’s
wine scene.
Though the Palazzo Roccabruna is now a working office where studies
are organized and promotional plans are imagined and executed, it
also houses permanent and special exhibitions on the products of
Trentino (both enogastronomical and otherwise). Experts in attendance
at the celebration were particularly taken by the “Cantina
Storica,” which flaunts outstanding examples of Trento Classico
from estates like Giulio Ferrari, the producer to make the first
local sparkling
wine in 1902. Also highly regarded was a current
presentation of “The Ages of the Trento DOC,” which highlights
outstanding vintages and NV blends from top winemakers.
