DOCG Recognizes Quality in Abruzzo
Excepting lone producers like Valentini who have distinguished themselves
with truly outstanding bottlings, the mid-Italian region of Abruzzo
remains obscure in wine circles worldwide. However, winemakers here
are determined to earn recognition, and the last five years have
seen an impressive rise in quality wine coming from this little known
region. Currently taking great strides is the area of Teramo, where
local entrepreneurs Dino Illuminati and Camillo Montori have procured
two distinctions, the Controguerra DOC for red, white, and rosé wine,
and the DOCG of Colline Teramane, which will apply only to top quality
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This designation was born of the conviction
that the Colline Teramane, or hills of Teramo, are an ideal terroir
for grape growing where wines convey the quality of the land particularly
well. At a recent conference on this zone, esteemed experts from
throughout the Boot agreed that the DOCG itself will help the wine
of the area to break into markets worldwide, allowing superior estates
to prove their worth and bring glory to Abruzzo.
