Indigenous Varietals of Italy to be Featured
at Convention
Preparations have already begun in Naples for a
national convention that will take place there in June: the First
Convention
on Wine
from Indigenous
Italian Varietals will cover three days and will feature thousands
of wines hailing from every corner of the Boot, including Aglianico,
Verdicchio,
Dolcetto, Lagrein,
Vermentino, Barbera,
Trebbiano,
and Nero
d'Avola.
In attendance will be experts and specialized journalists
alongside many of the major international buyers both from established
markets looking to diversify and expand the range of Italian wines
available to consumers and from newly developing ones where consumers
are just starting to familiarize themselves with quality wine. Southern
Italian winemakers are looking
forward to the opportunity to exhibit their little-known libations
beside their counterparts from regions like Piemonte and
Toscana that
are much more conspicuous in the world of wine. The conference will
also feature numerous special interest events, ranging from
a presentation on “Flavors,
Wines, and Volcanoes” in Herculaneum,
a city neighboring Pompeii that was also buried in the eruption of
Mount Vesuvius to a tasting
of particularly rare varietals like Magliocco, Timorasso, Tamurro,
Cagnulari, and Sussumaniello.
