Winemakers of Piemonte Target Developing Markets
A study conducted by the Enoteca del Piemonte
showed that China is the primary target for expanding the export
of wine along with other Asian markets and Russia following close
behind.
The study, which included 25
Piedmontese
estates including the renowned Azienda
Marchesi di Barolo, is part
of a national effort led by the Enoteca d’Italia
to listen to the needs and opinions of wine producers, consumers,
and distributors. Of those interviewed, 68% said that export accounts
for most of their business, and for the smallest estates (those producing
less than 500,000 bottles annually) it makes up more than 80% of
the total earnings. Many of the wineries cited the US, Germany, Canada,
the UK, and Japan as important importers, and all had similar goals
of expanding into new markets. Maurizio Anselma, of the Azienda
Famiglia Anselma of Barolo, explained that a unified effort is necessary to
promote the wines of Piemonte abroad; he also stressed, however,
that a wide, knowledgeable consumer base in Italy is an indispensable
foundation that should not be neglected.
