Italian Producers Receive Prestigious
Awards
The
well-known
magazine Wine Enthusiast has announced the five nominations for
its “Wine Star Award 2004,” and two of these select
positions went to Italian estates. Antinori and Masi, both among
Europe’s greatest estates, are part of this exclusive group
and hope to hear their names when the winner is announced on
the first of October. Italy’s winemakers are well acquainted
with such renown; in fact, it was just last year that the Wine
Star Award for vitivinicultural region of the year went to southern
Italy.
Wine Spectator, a highly visible wine publication, has honored Masseto,
a pure merlot from Ornellaia, announcing that it is possibly the
best red wine ever to come out of Tuscany and conferring upon it
an extraordinary rating of 100 points. Leonardo Raspini, the general
director of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, gave much of the credit
to the terroir where the grapes are grown and to the climatic effect
of the sea. He was proud to say that the terroir transmits a unique
character that makes Ornellaia’s wines unmistakably unique.
