WINE NEWS /
Sicilian Wine Popular Abroad
In
America, France, Germany, and Japan, Sicilian wine is well loved.
Of the seven million hectoliters of wine produced in Sicily only
about one million are actually bottled, but one quarter of those
bottles are destined for foreign consumption. Sicily’s
regional consortium organized a survey that indicated blossoming
interest in the Chinese and Korean markets, where importation
of Sicilian wine has already increased by 20%. White wine still
makes up 70% of the production in this region, but most popular
among foreign consumers is Nero d’Avola. This fad, though
certainly good for the island’s economy, has caused a noticeable
drop in quality from lesser producers who aim merely for high
quantities to satisfy the demand. The consortium hopes that more
wineries will follow in the footsteps of estates like Planeta and Palari, which are already known worldwide for exacting
standards that
result
in wines
of which Sicily can be proud.
