Guide to indigenous varietals
The winners of the coveted "Corona" or
"crown" prize have been announced by Gribaudo, publisher
of the only guide to the "indigenous" wines of Italy, Vini
Buoni d’Italia (literally, the "Good Wines of Italy").
Over the course of five months, 50 tasters from every region of Italy
tasted 15,000 wines from more than 3,500 producers. Of these, 115
were awarded the Corona, with Piemonte receiving the most awards,
followed by Toscana and the Veneto.
Now in its third edition, the guide profiles only
wines made with Italian indigenous varietals and it only requests
samples from top winemakers.
The guide will be released mid-October and the official
launch will take place on November 12 at the International Wine Festival
in Merano, Italy.
This year's guide also includes notes on the best
"cooperative" cellars, i.e., associated growers and winemakers
who often make some of Italy’s best wines at competitive prices.
The guide also offers special praise for the 2004 Dolcetto DOC (Alba,
Diano, and Dogliani), the 2001 Barolo DOCG, and the Montepulciano
d'Abruzzo DOC, in view of each appellations' respective achievements.
Among the 115 recipients of the "Corona"
were winemakers Giacosa,
Clerico, and
Giacomo
Conterno.
