Italian Women of Wine
The Associazione Nazionale Le Donne del Vino or National
Association of Women of Wine was founded in 1988 by Elisabetta Tognana
in Friuli. Today,
it can boast of over 500 active members: producers, wine directors,
restaurateurs, sommeliers, and wine writers who live and work throughout
Italy.
"They say that we [Italian women of wine] represent
the 'other half of the cellar and the other half of the vineyard,'"
wrote Tognana in the organization's mission statement. "This
may be true but there are a lot of us and we work in every field"
of the wine world. "Our goal is to make a positive contribution
to the development of the often contradictory relationship between
women and wine."
One of the group's leading members is Maria
Angela Schiopetto, daughter of legendary Friulian winemaker Mario
Schiopetto. Following in the footsteps of her father, Maria Angela
is a firm believer in low yields and limited production. Under her
leadership, Schiopetto has continued to produce some of Italy's greatest
white wines (her father began making quality wine in Friuli back in
1964 when the majority of Friulian grapes were sold in bulk to make
cheap table wine).
