Brunello vineyards used as laboratory
Scientists from the Universities of Bologna, Firenze,
Foggia, Palermo, Sassari, Udine, Torino, and Trieste, and Italy's
National Center for Research (CNR) will conduct an around-the-clock,
minute-by-minute analysis of a vineyard on the famed Col
d'Orcia estate in Montalcino, one of the greatest producers of
Brunello
di Montalcino. The so-called "Laboratory Under the Stars"
brings together Italian botanists, agronomists, and meteorologists
from every corner of the country. They will carefully monitor every
plant, leaf, and berry for an entire growth cycle and study samples
from the vineyard in a conventional laboratory. The main objective
of the study is to better understand the health-enhancing properties
of wine and environmentally friendly approaches to winemaking.
"Our winery has been working with the University
of Firenze for some time," says Edoardo Virano, the company's
liaison with the scientists. "We have had researchers come here
before, but this is the first time we've seen so many participants,
from so many different Italian universities, gathered together for
such an ambitious project."
