Matera DOCs
The province of Matera (famous for its ancient cliff-dwelling
capital) has obtained approval of its first DOCs. The new appellations
(six total) mark an important step for Basilicata's wine industry
and establishe standards for the production of wine and the cultivation
of grapes in the province.
The DOCs are as follows:
Matera Rosso: min. 60% Sangiovese, min. 10% Aglianico,
min. 10% Primitivo.
Matera Primitivo: min. 90% Primitivo.
Matera Moro: min. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, min. 20%
Primitivo,
min. 10% Merlot.
Matera Greco: min. 85% Greco.
Matera Bianco: min. 70% Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata,
min. 10% Greco.
Matera Spumante: min. 70% Greco.
The breathtaking medieval city of Matera is the world's
great example of a cliff-dwelling city: its homes are literally carved
into the face of a ravine. The so-called Sassi di Matera or "Stones
of Matera" have been recognized as a world treasure by UNESCO.
