ARSIA study of Tuscan clones
Viva la différence! Toscana's
Regional Agency for Agricultural and Forestral Development and Innovation
(ARSIA) has published the findings of a two-year comprehensive study
of indigenous varietals planted in the region. The survey, conducted
in collaboration with the University of Florence, was intended to
determine the exact number of clones for each grape and yielded the
following results:
Sangiovese – 70 clones
Morellino – 13 clones
Canaiolo nero – 32 clones
Mammolo – 10 clones
Aleatico – 7 clones
Ansonica – 25 clones
Vermentino bianco – 47 clones
Verdello – 75 clones
Colorino – 13 clones
The next phase of the project will evaluate the relationship
between indigenous Tuscan clones and terroir and will perhaps provide
a basis for a future "cru" system in Toscana. The findings
are a testament to the wonderfully varied panorama of Italian indigenous
varietals. Viva la différence, indeed.
