Enosis opens new facility in Monferrato
Famed enologist Donato Lanati and his consulting
firm Enosis have opened their new state-of-the-art enological research
facility in Monferrato, Piemonte
(in the township of Fubine, province of Alessandria). The complex
is called Meraviglia ("Wonder") and was constructed on the
site of a 17th-century winery. It includes laboratories, a virtual
winery, and a classroom/tasting room that can accommodate 60 tasters
at once. The site's experimental vineyard will be planted with 37
indigenous varietals.
The focus of the facility's research, says Lanati, is to "determine
the exact moment when the genes of a varietal achieve their greatest
expression in a given territory." Enosis' quest is part of a
larger movement in Italy to identify the genetic profile of Italian
indigenous varietals and the ideal pairings of varietal and terroir.
Enosis will also host six students from the Univeristy of Torino
who will spend the fifth year of their enology degree program studying
there.
