Barbaresco: The Queen of Wines

The third most collected wine of Italy is Barbaresco. It is commonly referred to as Barolo’s younger sibling: where Barolo is king, Barbaresco is queen. The later is similar in style, though the wine is generally less full-bodied and the regulations demand less ageing in a cask as a result. The zone of Barbaresco is a tiny area in the Langhe, where the land is divided among a very small number of producers who extract wonderfully reliable wines from the land. Though still in the shadows of its neighbor, this wine can certainly stand on its own merits. Made completely from Nebbiolo, Barbaresco is a complex wine with gripping tannins yet displays impressive elegance.

IWM Featured Book: A Wine Atlas of the Langhe
The goal of this book is to describe the wines, the territory, and the men and women who labour to produce the great Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Municipality by municipality and hillslope by hillslope, the book explores the unique features that have enabled these two to rank among the world's most exclusive and highly prized wines. Special care has been devoted to the illustrations, which include breathtaking aerial photographs and reproductions of labels from leading producers in both zones.

The many eye-witness reports give us a privileged insight into social life and rural techniques in the words of the area's older residents. Finally the chapters on The Greats of Barolo and Barbaresco are the fruit of research into the lives of the founders of winemaking in the Langhe, including growers, scholars, oenologists, cellar-men and aristocratic entrepreneurs, beginning with Camillo Benso, Conte di Cavour, and Marchesa Giulia Falletti of Barolo.
