Producer: Querciabella

Region: Toscana

DOC(G):
Chianti Classico
Toscana IGT

About the Producer:
Giuseppe Castiglioni was born in Milan and spent much of his adult life in Mexico. When he was ready to settle down, though, he stumbled upon an enchanting piece of land in Toscana, where he restored an old house to create a lovely home for himself and his family. Finding himself in the heart of Chianti’s wine country, he planted a few vines as a hobby and made wine for his family and friends to enjoy.

… But the potential of the land was too great a temptation. Expanding his vineyards to a total of 25 hectares in Greve in Chianti, Castiglioni became engrossed by his wine and in 1987 hired enologist Guido de Santi to ensure that only the best wines would come from Querciabella. The family later acquired vineyards in the Albarese zone of the Maremma for planting international varieties like Cabernet and Merlot. De Santi is still the creative hub of this ultramodern estate today, but Giuseppe now shares his responsibilities with his son Sebastiano. This elite team has developed Batàr, considered by many to be the greatest white wine of Toscana, as well as the top-notch Sangiovese/Cabernet blend known as Camartina, and they boast the rare distinction of presenting a Chianti Classico normale that was awarded Tre Bicchieri by the Gambero Rosso. They also make Palafreno, a rich, elegant blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, and will soon present new Bordeaux-style wines hailing from their vineyards in the Maremma. They dry-farm the grapes (irrigation is illegal in Chianti) with special biodynamic methods that are much more strict and careful than simply organic. Querciabella's careful selection in the vineyard and temperature controlled fermentation precedes lengthy maceration in stainless steel vats to produce greater fruit extraction - an important technique in developing substantial varietal character.

Sebastiano cheerfully extols the virtues of great wine as the artistic expression of the winemaker’s thoughts, emotions, and dreams. If this is true, then he, his father, and de Santi must be true Renaissance men, elegant and well-rounded, with complex ideas and plenty of verve.

Querciabella Palafreno
Palafreno follows Querciabella's philosophy, which is to create wines of great refinement with an authentic connection to their 'terroir.' Its name is an ancient Italian word which designates a noble riding horse used by medieval knights for travel, parades, or tournaments.
