(click here to order)

Region: Toscana

DOC(G):
Brunello di Montalcino

About the Producer:
Here, Angelo Gaja, the biggest name in the Piemonte and perhaps Italian wine, applies his wizardry on the Sangiovese grape to make Italy's second greatest wine, Brunello di Montalcino.

In 1974 Roberto Bellini purchased the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino and eventually sold the land in 1994 to Angelo Gaja. The property's forty hectacres of vineyards produce two Brunello di Montalcino wines called Sugarille and Rennina.

The parish church, or “pieve,” of Santa Restituta stands on the winery property and gives it its name. The Sugarille vineyard was first recorded in the inventory of the Pieve compiled in 1547. It has remained the name of the vineyard for more than four centuries and is now also the name of the wine from this vineyard. Here the Sugarille wine is the product of 3.5 hectares of vines planted by Bellini back in the mid eighties, where the soil is less fertile and naturally produces smaller, looser bunches of greater concentration. The Rennina comes from the best vines in the bulk of the estate; three non-contiguous vineyard sites that bore the name Rennina, which according to historic documentation that dates back to the 8th century.

1995 was the first vintage where Angelo Gaja had total control over the viticulture and vinification of these Brunello di Montalcinos. Even with the Sangiovese learning curve, he has already received 94+ points on these wines and we can only expect better wines in the future with Gaja's investment in the both the land and cellar. He has rebuilt the winery so that all operations will happen underground at naturally controlled temperatures.
