About the Producer:
When Cosimo
de’ Medici finally prevailed in 1559 after years of fighting
for control of Siena, an indignant group of nobles preferred to
leave their home than to submit to their new lord: it was this
emigration that brought Conte Scipione Costanti to Montalcino,
where he built a villa in Colle al Matrichese. Generations later
on the same property, Santi and Tito Costanti grew the first of
the local clone of Sangiovese to be vinified as a single-varietal
wine, and Tito presented two bottles of this Brunello – labeled
1865 and 1869 – at an exhibition of quality wine from the
territories surrounding Siena.
The 20th century saw the first commercial Costanti Brunello with
Conte Emilio, who built on his ancestors’ labor and study
of the land when he began production in the early 70’s. He
and his brother Elvio created a top-flight wine made from 10 ha
of vineyards within the family’s 25 ha estate. In 1982 the
time came to pass the precious operation to younger hands, and
the estate lured their grandson Andrea away from his studies in
geology. This current generation, still living in the ancestral
villa, engrossed himself wholeheartedly in the Costanti estate,
where he enlisted the direction of consultant Vittorio Fiore. Together,
the two present elegant, fragrant Brunello and Brunello Riserva
as well as a Rosso di Montalcino and Vermiglio. Despite the oak
used sparingly for all but the Brunello normale, they maintain
traditional practices and keep production extremely limited for
these stellar wines.
