The
goal of this book is to describe the wines, the territory, and
the men and women who labour to produce the great Barolo and Barbaresco
wines. Municipality by municipality and hillslope by hillslope,
the book explores the unique features that have enabled these two
to rank among the world's most exclusive and highly prized
wines. Special care has been devoted to the illustrations, which
include breathtaking aerial photographs and reproductions of labels
from leading producers in both zones.
The many Eye-witness Reports give
us a privileged insight into social life and rural techniques in
the words of the area's older residents. Finally the chapters on The
Greats of Barolo and Barbaresco are the fruit of research
into the lives of the founders of winemaking in the Langhe, including
growers, scholars, oenologists, cellar-men and aristocratic entrepreneurs,
beginning with Camillo Benso, Conte di Cavour, and Marchesa Giulia
Falletti of Barolo.
