About the Producer:
Antonio Mastroberardino
is a legend in the wine world of Campania. Hailing from
a long line of winemakers, he inherited the name of Berardino as
it was altered in the seventeenth century, when one of Antonio's
ancestors began working as a winemaker and added the title of Mastro,
meaning master craftsman. Taking
pride in the traditions of his family and of the Irpinia region,
he has achieved great things with the fruit of the estate's holdings
in the most exclusive areas of Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino,
and Taurasi.
This winemaker and others help to preserve the viticultural and
enological heritage of this historic
region
of
ancient Roman
cellars. Mastroberardino does his part by managing the lands once
used as
vineyards for
the ancient
city
of Pompeii.
These
sites
have
been
planted
with the same vines used in Classical times, vines that remain
crucial
to the winemakers of Campania: Taurasi was praised by Titus Livius,
the Greco grape was imported by the Hellenes before the founding
of Rome, and Fiano di Avellino is a native grape that was known
to the ancients as Latino. The Mastroberardinos are responsible
for the conservation of these ancient varieties and for creating
single-variety wines from them.
Despite Antonio's ingrained sense
of tradition, he has also been incredibly progressive in his winemaking.
In fact, it was he who
introduced radical new techniques to Campania two decades ago,
and he remains at the forefront of innovation in his vinification.
