Producer: Elena Fucci

Region: Basilicata

DOC(G):
Aglianico del Vulture

About the Producer:
When he began producing simple wines on this land, Generoso Fucci was still a tenant farmer of Villa Rotondo; but in 1970 he seized an opportunity to make it his own. He divided the land with the Paternoster family and started the estate that is now run by his grandson, Nicola, and named for Nicola's daughter Elena. The three hectares currently planted with vines are in the viticultural nucleus of Vulture, where the Fucci family now produces Aglianico del Vulture Titolo, one of southern Italy’s greatest wines.

More on Fucci:
Perched above the famous Villa Rotondo, the Fucci property towers over the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture area in Basilicata. At 650 meters of altitude the soil is pure black volcanic ash, also locally known as "pozzolana." "Titolo" is the name of this Lava channel or "costone," which came down from the now extinct Vulture volcano. Nobody owns vineyards located higher than the Fucci's, no winery harvests later than the Fucci's, making these Aglianico grapes the last grapes harvested in all of Europe for dry red wine making!

The Fucci family's presence in Barile dates from their great grandfather, Nicola Salvatore Fucci, who worked as "fattore" of Tenuta Rotondo. His son, aptly named "Generoso," continued as the Aglianico viticulturist for Tenuta Rotondo. In 1971, Generoso Fucci bought the vineyards and the Titolo Tower that comprise the Elena Fucci property, which today is run by his son, Salvatore and his wife, Carmela. Their three children, Elena, Rosella and the young Generoso promise the future, as Elena is studying at Pisa to be an enologist, and her young brother, Generoso, is a most impressive taster! The hard work of the Fucci family is richly manifested in the Titolo glass! If you like this Aglianico del Vulture, be sure to try Paternoster, another top producer of Basilicata.
