About the Producer:
The Allegrini
family has played an important role in Valpolicella since the 16th
century. Giovanni Allegrini led the latest generation, questioning
traditional practices and pioneering the quest for quality in the
region. Beginning in the early 1960s, he pieced together a super-star
team making some of Valpolicella's best wines. Today, his children,
Franco, Walter (who passed away in 2003), and Marilisa, continue
to guide the winery to the highest international levels, following
their
father’s
vision.
Giovanni was one of the earliest pioneers of quality Valpolicella.
In the early eighties he purchased the La Grola hill in Sant'Ambrogio
for the sole purpose of producing fine cru wines. The chalky and stony
soils of Podere La Grola are at an elevation of 1000 feet above sea
level and represent the best vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico
region. His dream has become a reality and their wines now come from
their own vineyards in the communes of Sant'Ambrogio and Fumane. The
estate continues to be a leading force in taking Veneto to the next
level with the introduction of Terre di Fumane, a high tech grape
drying facility in Fumane. Needless to say, it is the first and the
largest of its kind with the capability of drying up to 600 tonnes
of grapes (the space is rented to other producers as well).
All of the Allegrini wines come from the 90 hectares of vineyards,
which include his Amarones, Reciotos, Valpolicellas, and IGT wines
(which are listed below).

La Poja
This is Allegrini's most celebrated and collected wine, as well
as being one of Valpoicella's greatest, especially if you factor
in that this
is
not a appassimento
or ripasso influenced wine nor is it made from a blend. La Poja
is 100% Corvina and the grapes are selected 2.65 hectares - (6,50
acres) are situated at the top of the wonderful, ancient La Grola
Podere (vineyard) and are trained via the
spalliera
method. The variety chosen was considered to be the most appropriate
because, according to an local legend, it was said to have originated
from that particular hill.
La Grola
The one-time Valpolicella has changed its ingredients with the
inclusion of Syrah (10%) and Sangiovese (5%) to the Corvina (70%)
and Rondinella (15%) blend (sacrificing the Molinara grape) creating
a lushious, full-bodied and elegant wine.
Palazzo delle Torre
This blend of Corvina (70%), Rondinella (25%), and Sangiovese (5%)
is a smooth, full-bodied cru made in an innovative ripasso style
- which is a process where the finished wine is "passed back over"
the skins used to produce Amarone or Recioto, causing a second
fermentation to take place. In this unique case, 70% of the grapes
picked are vinified immediately. The remaining 30%
are left to dry until the end of December when they are vinified
and re-fermented with the wine from the fresh grapes. The result
is higher alcohol content, rounder style, lower acidity and more
extraction than a Valpolicella Classico.
